SAArts Offers WHAT, Exactly?

... The LoW-DoWn on recently featured SAArts Events & Happenings:

  • AUDITIONS
Auditions are held for productions, our improv group, and special projects.  They are open to all current and past students, staff, and, from time to time, local artists.  Notices are posted via our website, mailing lists, and around campus.

Q:  HOW CAN I FIND OUT ABOUT SAArts AUDITIONS:

Join our E-Mailing List by writing to:  studentarts@howardcc.edu or check our fabulous WEBSITE:  www.howardcc.edu/studentarts

  • PRODUCTIONS
Two major productions are mounted each year, usually in HCC's black box theatre space.  SAArts productions feature professional and student directors, designers, stage managers, technicians, run crew, carpenters, electricians, etc., and many, many outrageously gifted student and alumni performers!  (See
HOW MANY PRODUCTIONS?   below for more info)!

  • NEW: Dance Company
Jenny Male, HCC's Director of Dance & Movement heads up SAArts first-ever Student Dance Company!  This group will blend together all artistic elements in unexpected, cutting-edge, and EXCITING performances... featuring the work of Dancers, Choreographers (students & professionals), actors, vocalists, musicians, and visual artists!  SAArts Dance Company will hold its first auditions during the fall of 2006 in preparation for its premiere in March, 2007!

  • ACTORS' STUDIO; WORKS IN PROGRESS
An SAArts entity that develops and performs original productions over the span of one semester… usually every other year.  This group began as a touring troupe, but now makes its home in HCC's new Black Box Theatre.

  • ORIGINAL PLAY READING SERIES
One bare stage.  Words.  Voices.  A branch-off of SAArts' Actors' Studio; Works In Progress.  Student, Alumni, Staff, and Local Playwrights are invited from time to time to submit original works.  Those chosen in the past have received readings in front of a live audience over several consecutive weekends.  The directors are comprised of students and guest artists.  The actors featured are our most gifted students and alumni.  Certainly an entity that continues to grow, offering more opportunities for writers, directors and actors... and audiences yearning for fresh voices.

  • IMPROV GROUP
YO' MAMA'S COOKIN' is SAArts' extremely successful (and hilariously fun) 7 year-old performance group co-directed by Bruce Nelson and Jenny Male.  YMC auditions new improv talent at the top of each spring semester.  YMC's Seasons are scheduled each Spring, with various Friday Night performances in HCC's new Black Box Theatre.

  • OPEN-MIC'S
SAArts Open-Mic's are open to all who wish to share brief artistic pieces including movement, dance, poetry, theatre, music, etc.  Past Open-Mic's have also featured visual art, and have been presented in venues in and outside of HCC's campus.

  • FREE WORKSHOP SERIES
SAArts' "friend raiser," offering 1.5 hours of free training in dance, movement, audition techniques, etc.  Open to students, alumni, staff AND the community!  Hugely popular!

  • TECHNICAL OPPORTUNITIES
The beauty of offering opportunities in theatre within a community college; HANDS ON EXPERIENCE in the World of Technical Theatre!  We recruit folks with and without previous experience throughout the year!  We are always looking for good, committed folks interested in carpentry, lights, sound, props, costumes, run crew, etc… year 'round! Training provided.  Some positions are paid!
